Beyond The Lens

Beyond The Lens: The Inside Story

“Every photograph is more than an image – it is a moment, a memory, a voice, a piece of who we are.”

Photo Exhibition Dates: 04th September – 15th October 2025

Photography is one of the most powerful ways of embracing our identity and heritage, particularly in a country whose tragedies and triumphs have been so meticulously and passionately documented.

For over seventy years, since the 1940s, South African photographers have chronicled not only the big moments of our history but also the small, everyday details that make up our lives – the resilience, the struggles, the laughter, the hurt, hopes, and the landscapes that shape us. Through their lenses, we see more than images. We see stories, memories, and reminders of the journeys that have brought us here. Preserving, protecting, cherishing, and celebrating these stories gives us a sense of belonging, helping us to acknowledge the past, understand the present, and inspire future generations.

Beyond The Lens: The Inside Story is a landmark South Africa photography exhibition, an invitation to look deeper within. Each photograph here is more than a snapshot in time – it carries the voice, the perspective and the heart of the photographer who stood in that very moment. Together, these images create an intimate story of our history, our identity and the unbreakable spirit of South Africa.

As you explore the exhibition, take a moment with each photograph. Read the stories. Step into the shoes of the person behind the camera. Can you see the streets and hear the voices, feel the sweat of the sun or the cool breeze off the sea, smell the must, the dust, the dampness, the longing, the lust? What emotions do these images stir within you? Joy, sadness, silence, reflections on an ever-unfolding history, or an intimate, unspoken memory from your own life?

Step inside. Let the photographs speak to you. Every story still breathes, evoking memory and meaning of what was, what is, and what might be – beyond the lens.
