David Goldblatt – In Boksburg Book. These photographs capture life in Boksburg—a small-town, middle-class, predominantly white community near Johannesburg.
Description
In 1979-1980, these photographs capture life in Boksburg—a small-town, middle-class, predominantly white community near Johannesburg. Having roots in places like Randfontein and Boksburg, I felt a sense of familiarity with Boksburg while simultaneously discovering it anew. Standing on street corners, I observed the flow of orderly life: the spaces, roads, painted lines, low buildings, sky, and veld. Both white and black people moved in their separate yet intertwined ways, illuminated by the sharp Highveld light. Boksburg, like Randfontein, was nondescript yet compelling, shaped by white dreams and proprieties. However, the town’s history has evolved; it no longer adheres to the rigid divisions of the past.
Immaculate, still sealed, and signed by David Goldblatt on the first page of the book. Please see images for examples.
