Edwin Maina

Edwin Maina is a self-taught Kenyan photographer based in Nairobi whose practice moves between portraiture, fashion, fine art and cultural observation. Photography began as a hobby before developing into his primary artistic medium, giving him a way to communicate ideas about the environments he inhabits and the people he encounters.

Maina’s relationship with image-making began before photography. He has painted since childhood, an experience that continues to inform his sensitivity to colour, composition and the construction of an image. Rather than approaching photography as an isolated discipline, he works across photography, styling and set design. Clothing, objects, architecture and landscape can become as significant as the person being photographed, allowing him to build images in which identity is expressed through both subject and surroundings.

This approach places Maina’s work at an intersection between fashion photography and a broader contemporary photographic practice. Some photographs are carefully constructed through styling, collaboration and set-making. Others emerge from sustained engagement with particular places and communities. Across both approaches is an interest in African life as something lived in the present rather than treated as a fixed visual tradition.

Collaboration has been particularly important to his development. Maina is a member of Urban Pitchaz, a four-person Nairobi collective working across photography, film, fashion, styling and design. The collective has described its work as an attempt to tell African stories from within the communities and creative cultures that produce them. Fashion becomes one of the tools through which contemporary East African identity can be documented, questioned and reimagined.

In 2021 Maina photographed MATATU, produced for WAUZINE Issue 003 as part of the British Council’s Creative DNA programme for Fashion Scout. The project brought together Kenyan designers, models and creatives within a larger initiative connecting Kenya’s fashion industry with international networks. Maina’s role as photographer placed his image-making within an emerging generation of East African creatives using fashion not only commercially but as a means of representing contemporary culture.

His work also extends beyond the constructed fashion image. In The People of Rusinga Island, Maina photographed the community of Rusinga Island on Lake Victoria. Fishing, painted boats, the lake and the routines surrounding it become part of a portrait of a place in which livelihood, identity and inherited traditions remain closely connected. Rather than separating people from their environment, the series considers how the two continually shape one another.

Maina’s photographs have increasingly circulated beyond Kenya. In 2023, his portraits accompanied a Nataal feature on Kenyan musician Kabeaushé. In 2024, Creative Review profiled Maina and his approach to learning photography outside formal art-school structures, as well as the importance of creative community to his practice. The feature included campaign work for Kenyan fashion label KikoRomeo and South African label Asha Eleven.

Maina’s work with Asha Eleven has continued across campaigns photographed in Kenya. In 2026, campaign imagery by Maina and photographer Kibe Nduni was presented by the fashion house as part of its Capsule presentation at Investec Cape Town Art Fair, bringing his photographs into conversation with fashion, design and contemporary art audiences in South Africa.

Across these different contexts, Maina remains interested in the possibilities of making images from within the culture he knows. His photographs do not attempt to define a single African experience. Instead they build a visual record from individual people, collaborations, clothes, landscapes and communities. Fashion and fine art, staging and observation are allowed to coexist. The result is a practice grounded in Nairobi and East Africa while participating in a wider conversation about how contemporary African life can be photographed and represented.
