Frank Herholdt
Frank Herholdt’s work is built through careful construction and selection. His photographs operate as cinematic stills, where each frame feels considered and deliberate. Rather than documenting events as they unfold, the images are shaped through composition, atmosphere and pacing, creating a sense of narrative without being fixed to a single storyline.
Frank Herholdt
Frank Herholdt’s photographic work moves away from traditional documentary approaches, focusing instead on images that are staged, cinematic and controlled. Each photograph functions as a self-contained scene, where light, framing and subject placement are carefully resolved. The work invites a slower reading, allowing space for interpretation and ambiguity.
Biography
Frank Herholdt was born in South Africa, where he studied Fine Art at the Johannesburg School of Art. His path into photography began through a chance encounter with a photographer, which led him to leave formal studies and work as an assistant, gaining practical experience in the field.
In 1976, he moved to England, where he established a career in the advertising industry while continuing to develop his own personal work. Over time, his images became recognised internationally, receiving awards from institutions including the New York Art Directors Club, Cannes, Communication Arts, the AOP Awards, the London Photographic Awards and the B&W Spider Awards.
Herholdt’s work is shaped by strong visual influences from both theatre and cinema. Drawing from British theatre and portrait photography of the 1950s through to the 1970s, as well as Hollywood cinematography from the 1970s and 1980s, his photographs carry a distinct sense of staging, atmosphere and control. This influence is evident in the way each image feels constructed, often holding the tension of a scene rather than documenting an event.
His approach reflects a discipline formed in the pre-digital era, when each frame had to be carefully resolved in-camera. While he has embraced digital tools, the underlying structure of his work remains consistent, grounded in precision, lighting and composition. The result is a body of work that sits between still photography and cinematic image-making, where each photograph is treated as a complete and deliberate visual statement.
Cinematic Stills
These images reflect Herholdt’s approach to building a photograph as a complete scene. The composition is deliberate, with each element positioned to hold balance and tension within the frame. The result is an image that feels still yet suggestive of a wider narrative.
Selected Works
This selection brings together images that reflect Herholdt’s consistent visual language. Across the works, there is a focus on structure, light and restraint, with each photograph functioning as an individual, self-contained scene.
