Frank’s photography feels like a memory you forgot you had…
A blend of cinema, light, and stillness.
Frank Herholdt was born in South Africa, where he studied Fine Art at the Johannesburg School of Art. His career in photography began after a chance encounter with a photographer led him to leave art school and work as an assistant. In 1976, he moved to England, where he built a successful career in the advertising industry while pursuing personal projects.
Throughout his career, Frank’s work has earned numerous international awards, including recognition from the New York Art Directors Club, Cannes, Communication Arts, the AOP Awards, the London Photographic Awards, and the B&W Spider Awards.
Frank’s photography is deeply influenced by the pre-digital era, drawing inspiration from the great British theatre and portrait photographers of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, as well as one of Hollywood’s iconic cinematographers from the 70s and 80s. This influence gives his images their distinct theatrical and cinematic quality.
His work is characterised by the discipline and precision honed during a time when every shot had to be meticulously crafted in-camera. While he has embraced digital technology, Frank remains committed to the techniques and atmosphere of his early influences, creating photographs that seamlessly blend the timeless artistry of the past with a contemporary edge.
