Guy Neveling
Guy Neveling began his photographic career in the mid-1980s as a press photographer documenting South Africa during a period of political upheaval. His work later shifted into advertising, where he developed a distinct visual language shaped by both reportage and studio practice. Today, his focus centres on personal work and a continued exploration of image-making.
A Practice Between Documentary and Image Construction
Guy Neveling’s photographic career moves between immediacy and reflection. His early years were defined by press photography, working within fast-paced and often unpredictable environments. This period established a strong instinct for observation and responsiveness.
His later transition into advertising introduced a different kind of discipline, centred on control, lighting and constructed imagery. Over time, these two approaches have come to inform one another. His current work reflects a shift away from external demands, returning instead to a slower and more exploratory engagement with photography.
Biography
Guy Neveling began his career as a press photographer in the mid-1980s, working at a time when South Africa was undergoing significant political and social upheaval. As a young photographer, he found himself working quickly and often under pressure, responding to events as they unfolded. The pace of this environment meant that much of the work was produced with immediacy rather than long-term consideration, a reality that would later shape his reflections on the importance of preservation and archival practice .
During this period, photography was less about authorship and more about continuity. Assignments followed one another rapidly, and negatives and prints were often left behind in the process. Neveling has spoken about this with a sense of hindsight, recognising that work produced under such conditions can later hold unexpected historical and cultural value .
Following his early years in press photography, Neveling moved into advertising. This marked a decisive shift in both pace and methodology. The controlled environment of the studio allowed for a more deliberate approach to lighting, composition and image construction. He built a career within the commercial industry, receiving recognition at international festivals including D&AD and Cannes Lions, and being included in Lürzer’s Archive selection of the 200 Best Ad Photographers Worldwide.
Despite this success, the demands of commercial work introduced a different kind of pressure. Over time, Neveling began to move away from this environment, seeking a more independent and sustainable relationship with photography. His current focus is centred on personal work, where the emphasis lies on process rather than outcome.
This shift represents a return to photography as an open-ended practice. Without the constraints of commercial expectation, his work is guided by curiosity, experimentation and a renewed attention to everyday subject matter. He continues to explore different formats and approaches, often embracing slower methods and allowing space for uncertainty within the process.
At its core, Neveling’s practice reflects a long-term engagement with photography across multiple contexts. From the urgency of press work to the precision of advertising and into a more reflective personal phase, his work demonstrates an ongoing commitment to image-making as both craft and inquiry.
From Press Photography to Personal Work
Neveling’s trajectory from press photography to advertising and later to personal work reflects a broader shift in photographic practice. His early experience in documenting real-world events informs a continued sensitivity to subject and moment, while his commercial work introduced a structured and deliberate approach to image construction. His current focus allows for a synthesis of these experiences, returning to photography as an open and exploratory process.
Selected Series
Neveling’s work spans multiple contexts, including press photography, commissioned advertising work and personal projects. Each body of work reflects a different approach to image-making while remaining connected through a consistent visual discipline.
Sacred Valley
The Sacred Valley series reflects a shift towards observation and stillness within Guy Neveling’s practice. Moving through the Peruvian landscape, the work responds to the scale and quiet presence of the environment rather than directing it. The photographs are measured and attentive, allowing light, terrain and atmosphere to define the image. The series carries a sense of distance from his earlier, more immediate work, suggesting a slower engagement with place and time.

Southern Ocean
In the Southern Ocean series, Neveling turns his attention to the edge of land and water, where conditions are in constant motion. The work is shaped by weather, shifting light and the unpredictability of the sea. Rather than seeking dramatic moments, the photographs hold on transitional states, where surface and depth, clarity and obscurity intersect. The series reflects a continued interest in restraint, allowing the subject to remain unresolved.

The Karoo
The Karoo series returns to a distinctly South African landscape, defined by openness, distance and a reduced visual language. Neveling approaches the region without imposing narrative, instead working with what is present. The photographs emphasise structure, light and subtle variations within the terrain. In this series, the act of photographing becomes a process of slowing down, where the environment is observed over time rather than captured in a single decisive moment.
