Photograph overview

Pictured:

Lampedusa, Italy’s southernmost island, lies in the Mediterranean between Sicily, Malta and Tunisia. Positioned along one of the most active migration routes into Europe, the island has become a point of arrival, passage and uncertainty for those crossing the sea.

This work forms part of Jillian Edelstein’s ADRIFT series (2015–2020), a body of photographs made in response to the ongoing refugee crisis. Over this period, millions of people were displaced by war, conflict and environmental pressures across the Middle East and Africa, leading to sustained movement toward Europe.

Rather than focusing on moments of immediate crisis, Edelstein’s approach remains observational and considered. Her images reflect the spaces shaped by this movement, where presence, absence and the traces left behind begin to tell the broader story. The work avoids spectacle, instead offering a quieter record of a situation that continues to unfold.

Collecting Jillian Edelstein’s work holds a distinct place within contemporary photographic practice, particularly in relation to documentary storytelling and human presence. Her photographs are known for their directness and sensitivity, capturing moments with a clarity that feels both immediate and enduring.

For collectors, her prints offer more than visual strength. They represent a carefully observed record of people and place, grounded in authenticity and trust between photographer and subject. As her work continues to be exhibited and recognised across institutions and collections, well-produced prints carry increasing significance within both contemporary and historical contexts.
