Gavin Furlonger is a British-born photographer, director and archivist whose work in South Africa spans fashion photography, commercial image-making and the preservation of historically significant photographic archives through PAPA-SA and Gallery F.
Gavin Furlonger’s career moves between the creation of images and the preservation of them. Beginning in fashion and advertising photography in Cape Town during the 1970s, he developed a refined visual language grounded in controlled lighting and composition. In later years, his focus shifted toward safeguarding South Africa’s photographic heritage through the establishment of PAPA-SA and Gallery F. His work continues to connect photographic practice with archival responsibility, positioning photography as both an art form and a historical record.
Gavin Furlonger was born in 1947 in England and moved from London to South Africa in 1968. He began his photographic career under the guidance of photographer Lynton Stephenson, developing a strong technical foundation in studio lighting and composition.
During the 1970s, based in Cape Town, he built a career in fashion and advertising photography, working with leading agencies and brands. His work from this period is characterised by a controlled and considered visual approach, combining precision with a cinematic sense of atmosphere.
In the early 1980s, Furlonger relocated to Johannesburg, where he expanded his practice into directing television commercials. This transition allowed him to extend his photographic sensibility into moving image production, maintaining a consistent emphasis on structure, timing and visual clarity.
By the early 2000s, he turned increasing attention toward the preservation of South Africa’s photographic heritage. Recognising that many important analogue archives were at risk of loss or deterioration, he founded the Photographic Archival and Preservation Association of South Africa, known as PAPA-SA. The organisation focuses on locating, preserving and cataloguing historically significant photographic collections.
In 2002, Furlonger established Gallery F in Cape Town as a public platform through which these archives could be exhibited and collected. The gallery presents rare vintage and contemporary photography, with a particular focus on historically important South African photographers and archives.
Through his work with PAPA-SA and Gallery F, Gavin Furlonger has played a significant role in safeguarding South Africa’s photographic legacy, ensuring that important bodies of work remain accessible to collectors, researchers and future generations.
Through PAPA-SA and Gallery F, Gavin Furlonger has focused on locating, stabilising and preserving photographic archives that might otherwise have been lost. His work ensures that historically significant images remain accessible within a structured archival and curatorial framework.
Furlonger’s photographic career spans fashion and advertising work produced during the 1970s and 1980s. His images are defined by controlled lighting, considered composition and a cinematic approach to visual storytelling, reflecting a refined and disciplined photographic practice.
Furlonger’s fashion work from the 1970s was produced in Cape Town while working on campaigns for local agencies and brands.
