The Presentation
A selection spanning the early 1940s to the early 2000s is presented alongside photography being made today.
For FNB Art Joburg 2026, Gallery F presents a focused selection of vintage black-and-white archival photographs and contemporary works. Together, they trace more than five decades of visual practice while connecting earlier generations with the photographers shaping the record of the present.
The presentation does not attempt to offer a complete history. Instead, it brings selected viewpoints into conversation across time, showing photography as art, evidence, memory and record.
Today’s photography becomes tomorrow’s archive.
The Archival Foundation
South African photography remains central to Gallery F.
Gallery F’s archival focus has long been rooted in South African photography. The selection encompasses social documentary photography, portraiture, landscape and cultural record, tracing public events, private encounters, changing environments and everyday experience.
Original handprints and vintage material are considered both for the subjects held within the image and for the physical photograph itself, including its print date, process, provenance and condition.
A Wider African Programme
Building outwards from a South African foundation.
The presentation marks the next phase in Gallery F’s development as its programme expands to engage photography from across Africa and the African diaspora.
This wider direction creates connections between different photographic histories, generations and contemporary practices while retaining South African photography as a central part of the gallery’s identity.
Showing archival and contemporary photography together makes the photographic record visible as an ongoing process: inherited, questioned, extended and preserved for those who come next.

The Photograph as Object
Art, evidence, memory and record.
A photograph’s print date, process, edition, provenance and condition all contribute to its meaning and history. In original handprints and vintage material, the physical print may also carry direct evidence of the photographer’s working methods and decisions.
Researching and preserving this information keeps the photograph connected to the circumstances in which it was made and allows future audiences to encounter it with greater understanding.
About Gallery F
A gallery devoted to photography.
Gallery F is a Cape Town gallery founded on a long-term commitment to South African photography, with a particular focus on historically significant photographs, original handprints, vintage material and selected contemporary bodies of work.
Building on this foundation, the gallery is expanding its programme to engage photographers and bodies of work from across Africa and the African diaspora.
About PAPA-SA
Preserving South Africa’s photographic history.
Founded by Gavin Furlonger in 2002, the Photographic Archival and Preservation Association of South Africa works to safeguard important records of South Africa’s photographic history.
Its work includes identifying, organising, cataloguing, conserving, researching and digitising negatives, transparencies, prints, contact sheets and related documents.
